Quick Tips to Improve Fuel Efficiency

If you've been driving your vehicle for a while, you know how long before it runs out of gas. Many drivers will also drive across town just to save a few bucks on gas. Even if it's a few cents, if the gas station across the street is cheaper, that may be where you choose to go. However, there are additional ways you can save money on fuel. We have a few tips on how to improve fuel efficiency and save yourself a few extra coins.

Regularly check your tire pressure.
Checking your tire pressure can prevent premature tire wear and increase fuel mileage. Automotive shops sell affordable tire pressure gauges that you can keep in your vehicle. Or you can stop at the gas station; there are usually a few available. Check your vehicle's owner's manual for the recommended tire pressure. Or you can open your driver's door and look inside the door jam. Under-inflated and over-inflated tires may feel like a smooth drive but can significantly impact gas mileage.

Upgrade to synthetic motor oil.
If it's time for an oil change, choose synthetic motor oil. Synthetic motor oil boosts engine efficiency, allowing it to function at full capacity. Synthetic oil resists breakdown and lasts longer than conventional oil. It also can withstand high engine temperatures without degrading.

Replace the air filter.
For newer cars, a dirty air filter can impact acceleration but may not affect fuel mileage. However, older vehicles that are not equipped with computer-controlled engines may be greatly affected by dirty air filters. Whether your car is new or old, a clogged air filter can cause some detriment. Regularly changing the air filter can be relatively inexpensive and go a long way at saving on gas cost.

Schedule a tune-up.
Scheduling a maintenance service such as a tune-up is an excellent opportunity to have your vehicle inspected by a professional. During this service, your vehicle will have its fluids topped off, brakes checked, and tires checked. Your technician will also inform you whether filters need to be replaced. A tune-up can prevent long term damage and repair.
